I’m looking for recommendations and insights on the best apps for selling digital products on Shopify. My goal is to find reliable, feature-rich solutions that cater to different types of digital products, including large files, software, and streaming content.
Here are a few specific questions I’d love your input on:
Which Shopify apps do you recommend for selling digital products, and why?
Are there any apps with features like expiring download links or license key generation?
What’s the best app for selling large digital files (e.g., videos, software)?
Are there apps that support bundling digital products with physical items?
How do these apps handle file delivery and customer support issues?
Do you have experience with apps like Digital Downloads, SendOwl, or FetchApp? How reliable are they?
What app would you suggest for delivering streaming content like video tutorials?
Are there any hidden fees or limitations with these apps that I should be aware of?
How do these apps integrate with Shopify’s checkout and email systems?
What are the key factors to consider when choosing an app for digital products?
Your advice and experience would be hugely appreciated. If you’ve used any of these apps or have insights into the pros and cons, please share!
@AppifyPro Sounds like you’re writing an article about apps for selling digital products on Shopify! I run a digital downloads app - Filemonk - with my team; happy to answer any questions.
Filemonk We’ve been helping merchants for 2 years and we process 20+ TB of downloads every month.
Yep, Filemonk’s download links expire automatically. You can also set limits based on number of times or days after checkout. And yes, we also support selling licence keys!
Filemonk got a really big upgrade for uploads and I can confidently say we are one of the best out there for handling large files.
Yep, it’s easy to set up digital products bundled with physical. All you need to do, in Filemonk, is link the digital content to the physical products. We’ll then send the digital content to your customer when they purchase
File delivery - smooth and fast! Customer support - 380+ reviews and 4.9 rating; so I think pretty good?
We’ve worked a lot on addressing areas our competitors aren’t good at. I can’t speak for their reliability, but what I can tell you is that they probably aren’t as feature-complete as we are.
For streaming content, it’s best to not use a digital downloads app. Embed the content on your Shopify store so customers have a reason to visit your store often.
Most apps don’t have any hidden fees or limitations. It’s included in clear language on the Plans page.
Seamlessly! For example - with Filemonk, we add a “Download” button to Thank you page so customers get instant access after checkout. We also send emails with download links too.
For digital downloads apps, I’d recommend any merchant to focus on - 1. Security & content protection, 2. Ease of access to downloads for your customer. These 2 matter more than anything else.
Hello
I was scrolling and got here to your question.
I use this app for my store. It is free and very easy to use. It is Pendora Digital Download.
Sure I will answer the question which I have used as of now.
Yes, this app is free and easy to use sells your digital product, and gives you customization and you can test your own before going live.
Yes, this app has license key generation for each of your products and is easy to set up and generate.
Yes this app bundles physical products with digital as well. I sell online Diary on my store and offer sometime e-calender, e-planner, etc.
It helps you before sending each delivery and if having any response from your customer then they help you fix it fast.
See, there is no hidden fees, but yes a limitation of digital file storage limit. But they will help if any issue storage is full.
It works great with Shopify checkout and never faces any issues.
Customer support needs to be great, transparent, customization, and bundled with physical products as well.
You can install and check this app. I hope it will work for your store.
Try using Pendora Digital Downloads, it is an App available in the Shopify App Store that allows you to upload e-books, music, PDFs, and license keys on autopilot and empowers you to effortlessly build and manage your digital brand.
The best part is the App is currently free and it offers the fastest and most efficient 24*7 customer support in case you need assistance throughout your journey.
Here are the limitations of Filemonk I have found so far: There is no way to view the watermark on your document before selling. This means that the watermark could very easily obscure content! Also, there is no way to issue a download link of a product from the dashboard (free order), without going through a Shopify order. SendOwl is much better with these issues. I am really frustrated as I try to switch from SendOwl to literally any other company that can do what they do. So far, Filemonk and Sky Pilot are epic fails.
Thanks for trying out the app! Just answering your questions real quick -
You’ve probably already seen the “Preview” flow for setting up your watermark. That is the best way to know if it will show up correctly, but there’s no real way to know without placing a test order because the preview is a best guess. Sorry about that. That being said, we’ve seen most merchants not have any issues with it and I’m happy to jump in if needed.
Totally understand. If all you need is a link to the product to let customers download files, I’d love to chat, understand your problems and build it out. It is on our roadmap for later this year. But feel free to send a message and I’ll be happy to see if we can get it done earlier/soon.
I appreciate the willingness to follow up on this! My only issue with Preview is that the page does not resemble one of my pages in the slightest. My pages are standard letter size (8.5x11in) with portrait orientation (again, standard) and the preview looks like a half of a page, in a landscape format. I was able to set up a test order and check the watermark but it was not ideal since there is a lot involved in moving hundreds of products to a new platform without knowing how they will show up for customers. It would be wonderful if both this and the ability to (even slightly) tweak watermark placement could be addressed in a future update! As for the ability to issue a free order from the dashboard, I was just surprised to not see that, given that both Sky Pilot and SendOwl have that capacity. However, I will try to find a workaround for the customers that need that. Thanks again for your response and willingness to address these issues!
Thanks so much for your reply! Greatly appreciate it, and I’ll make sure we address both of these points in upcoming updates. We recently reprioritized app updates for Filemonk, so there’s lots to come this year. On top of the list is a way to let customers download without having to place an order. I’ll be back here with a reply soon as we have it!
Hey! I actually built a digital downloads app for Shopify, so I can share some insights on what to look for.
The key features you’ll want are: expiring download links, IP restrictions, and fraud protection to prevent abuse. For large files, make sure the app uses a CDN for fast delivery and doesn’t charge extra for bandwidth (that can get expensive quickly).
Most good apps handle bundling by auto-attaching files to specific products/variants. The important thing is that it integrates natively with Shopify’s checkout - avoid apps that redirect customers to external sites as it hurts conversions.
For streaming content, you’ll probably need a dedicated video platform (Vimeo/Wistia) alongside a delivery app.
My app Alva Digital Downloads handles most of these needs - we built it specifically because we were frustrated with hidden bandwidth fees and poor support from other solutions. We offer unlimited bandwidth even on the free plan and built-in fraud protection: https://apps.shopify.com/alva-digital-downloads
