What are the best strategies to reduce cart abandonment on Shopify?
Cart abandonment normally comes from trust or surprise costs, so fixing these could help a bit.
- Remove all surprises. you should show all the costs and transparent information, any additional fees should be included clearly so they donât feel uncomfortable at check out due to finding out a small fee added to their amount
- Simplize your check out, the fewer steps the better
- Recover your abandoned carts, set up email flows for abandoned check out, give small discounts and set up exit intent to catch leaving users
And consider optimizing and prioritizing mobile-friendly experience. An uncomfortable UI on mobile will be a big problem leading to abandoning your site
It depends on what niche you are in, honestly. Letâs say, for example, if you are in a business where you sell perishable items like baked food items or flowers, you need to add a delivery scheduling feature before checkout.
A free shipping bar or a progress bar also works great. Basically, it adds urgency to get a reward.
Lemme show you an example.
So this is a store called Anua. Look how they added a progress bar at the top of the cart drawer.
They have 5 tiers. By completing each tier, a customer gets a reward. Itâs a psychological thing where the customer keeps on adding items to get to the finish line. It definitely works.
Using apps for this is best. Go to the app store and look for âdelivery schedulingâ or âprogress barâ, you will get many apps.
I have used iCart Cart Drawer Cart Upsell to add a free shipping bar and an app called Stellar for adding a scheduling calendar at cart page.
Please read the app description before installing. My suggestions are based on my experience alone.
You may also use a persistent cart recovery app to synchronize your shopping cart across different devices and browsers. So whenever customers come back to finish, they donât have to start over. Have you considered cart recovery apps?

A good way to reduce cart abandonment on Shopify is to make the buying feel easy. Most people leave when checkout takes long, shipping charges appear late, or theyâre unsure if they can trust the store. Keeping checkout simple, allowing guest purchases, and giving popular payment options like cards, UPI, wallets, or cash on delivery can make a big difference. It also helps to show shipping costs early, mention delivery timelines clearly, and add things like customer reviews, return policies, and secure payment icons so shoppers feel confident placing the order. Also In Shopify, you can check abandoned carts by going to Orders â Abandoned checkouts in your admin.
It shows which customers left without completing payment, what products were in the cart, and lets you send a recovery reminder if needed
Cart abandonment usually comes down to a few simple things. Hereâs what works best
1. Be upfront about shipping costs Surprise shipping fees at checkout are the #1 reason people leave. Add a free shipping bar showing how close they are to qualifying like âYouâre $12 away from free shipping!â.
2. Use a slide cart, not a separate cart page Redirecting shoppers to cart breaks their flow. A slide-out drawer keeps them shopping and makes checkout faster.
3. Add cart upsells and free gifts Frequently bought together, BOGO, and free gift thresholds keep people engaged with the cart instead of abandoning it.
4. Show trust signals Payment icons, secure checkout badges, and a money-back guarantee in the cart reduce last-second hesitation.
5. Add gentle urgency A countdown timer for shipping cutoffs (âOrder in 2h for delivery Fridayâ) works - just keep it real, not fake.
6. Recover abandoned carts Set up abandoned cart emails (1h, 24h, 72h) to bring back the ones who still leave.
If you want all of this in one app instead of stacking multiple, you could try Oxify Cart Drawer. It includes the slide cart, free shipping bar, cart upsells, free gifts, post purchase upsell and product page upsell..
