I have been a seller on Etsy for years. The things that I have difficulty with are the things most people probably do.

Do I have free shipping or not? Etsy encourages you to offer free shipping. They send you messages that sellers sell more who offer free shipping. So I have complied and done so. What I noticed is it good not increase my sales at all. I either took a lose as I made cents selling a $5 item which shopping cost at least half of more. I increased my prices to cover the shipping but no one night them. I changed back to the buyer pays shipping and had more customers as my prices were lower. In the end, it didn’t matter which shipping option I chose.

Traffic or crickets? I used to be on all these teams promoting each other’s shops and items . I’d play all their games and do all the required activities. I spent hours promoting and marketing. However, traffic to my shop consisted mainly of those sellers. Yep, you guessed it. They were not buyers and I got zero sales. It is very random who views my items. Maybe they see one of my items on a Google search? Maybe they saw it on a social media post? Nope, most were just random. So all the hours I spent marketing on Etsy and social media were for nothing. Yes, I could pay for ads to showcase my items but that would mean losing more money which I can’t afford. In the end it didn’t matter how much marketing or promoting I did as it amounted to the same result of doing nothing.

Got something unique to sell? Nope, there will always be someone who sells a similar item. Nothing is really unique anymore. Especially since people are so creative and can see something you have and make it themselves. Yeah, yours night be better quality and overall aesthetics may be supervisor; however, theirs might be cheaper. You will always be battling to sell items that other people offer. It’s the way Etsy life is.

The perfect review downfall. Wow, you have all 5 star reviews. Surely this will help you sell items. Buyers write about how amazing, beautiful, and great quality your items they bought are. They praise your wonderful and personal experience you give them by offering above average customer service. This must help put your shop above others. However, this is you relying on the potential buyers to actually care about and read your reviews. I’m guilty of searching and looking at items I’m interested in without even glancing at the reviews. Most people don’t pay attention to or read reviews until they have decided on the specific item they are going to buy. 5 star reviews are great if people take the time to notice and read them.

So I’m selling items others do. I’ll offer above and beyond customer service. Again, this is a great idea but there is one glitch. You have to have customers. Customer service relies on interactions and communication with customers. Customer service doesn’t work if you don’t have customers.
