What are the tax obligations for Shopify sellers in Pakistan?

I’m planning to start selling through Shopify and would like to better understand the tax requirements for online businesses in Pakistan.

From what I’ve learned, Shopify sellers may need to register for an NTN, maintain accurate records of sales and business expenses, and file income tax returns. Depending on the nature of the business and applicable FBR regulations, some sellers may also have sales tax obligations.

I’m also interested in knowing what records should be kept for tax purposes and whether Shopify’s sales reports are sufficient or if additional documentation is recommended.

While researching this topic, I realized that many store owners prefer to consult a tax consultant to ensure they meet FBR requirements correctly and avoid mistakes during tax filing, especially when their business starts growing

Hey @jerrygarbus39 ,
If you’re selling through Shopify in Pakistan it’s generally recommended to register for an NTN if required under FBR regulations maintain proper records of your sales and business expenses and file your income tax returns accordingly. Depending on your business activities and applicable laws, sales tax registration and filing may also be required.

Shopify’s reports are helpful for tracking orders and sales but they may not be sufficient on their own for tax compliance. It’s a good practice to keep additional records such as invoices, expense receipts, payment records, bank statements, and any other supporting documents required by the FBR.

Since tax obligations can vary based on your business structure and circumstances, consulting a qualified tax consultant or accountant is the best way to ensure you comply with current FBR requirements and avoid issues as your business grows.

Thank You !

Hi @jerrygarbus39

Hi, I’m Vineet from Identixweb, a Shopify development company.

My honest suggestion: speak with a Pakistan-based tax consultant before launching or as soon as sales start. It’s much easier to set up the right NTN, bookkeeping, and filing process early than to clean everything up later.

You’re thinking in the right direction. If you plan to sell through Shopify from Pakistan, you should not rely only on Shopify reports or general online advice for tax compliance.

At a basic level, you may need NTN registration, proper sales and expense records, income tax filing, and possibly sales tax registration, depending on your business type, products, location, and FBR rules.

FBR’s own guidance lists income tax registration requirements such as CNIC, mobile number, email, bank account certificate, and business premises evidence, where applicable. It also states that sales tax filing requires registration with FBR to get STRN/login access for the e-file portal.

For records, I’d keep Shopify sales reports, payout reports, invoices, supplier bills, shipping/courier receipts, payment gateway records, bank statements, refund/return records, ad spend invoices, and all business expense proofs.
