What does server hosting with SSL mean for a custom app?

Hi!

I’m a total newbie, and am having a Shopify Expert help me with a custom app to meet the specific needs of my store. He has requested that I provide server hosting with SSL. I don’t even understand what this means. He says this is something external to Shopify. Please help!
