Hi guys my name is Davon I’m creating a Shopify theme for the food industry. I was wondering if you guys can help me out by answering a few questions. It would really help my research 
When you guys are getting a theme for Shopify what’s the most important thing you look for in a Shopify theme?
What’s the number one problem that you face as a Shopify merchant?
Last question what features do you wish your Shopify theme had that it currently does not?

If you’ve created themes for the food industry before, or worked on platforms designed for food businesses a you should be aware shopify is not a great fit for a lot of food business models, especially where perishability is a watchword.
Some limitations that affect food based businesses: no way to sell by the measure/part only whole-number quantity, there is no expiration system or auto unpublishing, no native product bundling/kits, store hours system, table reservation(calendar UI’s are a problem in themes) , bill splitting(multiple customers like at a restaurant) , no bottle deposit system, etc.
This means most those shortcomings have to be either custom built or use apps.
The problem then is the whole most themes provide ZERO design foundations or style-guidance for when merchants plugin such features for this industry in those case when they do choose to use shopify anyway. So websites can kinda look sloppy due to apps default styling not matching the brand/theme and merchants attempting to play designer to fix it . That is if the app supports any way to style things at all.

Wow great information this is very appreciated. I will take this into account when developing the theme ( if I develop for the food industry at all now). I will do more research and see If i can solve these problems.
Just to be clear most of what I listed is not solvable on the frontend in a technical sense.
I’m guess mainly alluding the theme has things like utility classes IF a merchant tries to shoehorn in a technical solution.
Or designs existing as references of what such features could look like as almost no themes have styleguides or component libraries so most aftermarket customization styling is just made up on the fly.
And the real headache is: you’d have to do all that without confusing customers into thinking shopify DOES have those features natively when they do not.
