What is difference between Extension only app and embedded app?

Hello everyone,

Could someone please help me understand the difference between extension-only apps and embedded apps? I’m a little confused about it, so please provide an example.

I also want to know if there are any other types besides these two.

Embedded Shopify Apps:

  • These apps integrate seamlessly into your Shopify admin dashboard. You can access their features and functionalities directly from within the Shopify interface.
  • Embedded apps often provide a smooth user experience as they leverage Shopify’s existing interface and functionalities.
  • Inventory management apps, order fulfilment apps, and marketing automation apps (when they have controls within the Shopify admin).

Extension-only Shopify Apps:

  • These apps don’t have their interface within the Shopify admin. They work by adding functionalities through extensions.
  • Extensions are small programs that add specific features to your store. Think of them like mini-apps within the Shopify platform.
  • Extension-only apps typically offer a more limited set of functionalities compared to embedded apps.
  • Examples Social media sharing buttons, product filtering tools, and custom checkout fields (all implemented through extensions).

An example of an extension-only app is Shopify Email:

An example of an app that contains embedded apps is ZOX Zipcode Check

What is a separate embedded app interface? I’m confused between the extension-only app and the Embedded app. I could not differentiate it with real-time examples. If you could explain it more then it would be helpful to me.
