I’m planning to migrate my existing WordPress website to Shopify and want to ensure a smooth transition without affecting SEO performance. My main concern is preserving organic traffic, search engine rankings, URLs, and backlinks during the migration process.
I’m looking for expert guidance or proven steps on how to properly convert a WordPress site to Shopify, including handling URL redirects, product/content migration, and SEO best practices. Any tools, plugins, or migration strategies that can help make the process safe and efficient would be highly appreciated.
the generic checklist is right but it skips the parts that actually cost people rankings.
first, you can’t keep your WordPress URL structure. Shopify forces /products/, /collections/, /pages/ and /blogs/ prefixes, so every redirect is a real one-to-one mapping, not a path preserve. pull your URLs sorted by organic traffic in Search Console and map the top ones deliberately. don’t treat all of them as equal, most pages get little or no traffic anyway.
second, and this is the one people botch, the redirect target has to be the relevant equivalent page, not the homepage. a lot of migrations dump every dead URL to the homepage to “catch” them, and Google reads redirect-to-homepage as a soft 404 and drops the link equity. a 301 only passes value when it lands somewhere genuinely equivalent.
also watch Shopify’s native URL redirect tool, it’s one-to-one only with no wildcards. if you have /blog/anything patterns you’ll need a Liquid fallback or an app to handle those in bulk.
are you keeping the same domain or moving to a new one? that decides whether you touch Change of Address in Search Console at all.
@slayva Could you share a link to your current WordPress website? I would love to run a preliminary crawl audit to see how many URLs we will be mapping, and lay out a safe, step-by-step roadmap for your transition.
Moving from WordPress to Shopify is a big step, but protecting your SEO is very doable. The most important thing to know is that Shopify forces a strict URL structure (like adding /products/ before your item names). Because your old WordPress links will change, you must set up 301 redirects. If you do not map your old URLs to your new ones, your backlinks will break and Google will drop your hard-earned rankings. For the actual data transfer, you can use a migration tool like Matrixify or Cart2Cart to safely move your products, customers, and blog posts over.
Handling all those URL redirects and fixing broken links by hand is a massive headache during a migration. To make this safe and easy, I highly recommend using SearchPie: SEO, Speed & Schema. It easily handles bulk 301 redirects to protect your old traffic, monitors your live site for any broken 404 links after the launch, and ensures your new Shopify metadata perfectly matches your old WordPress SEO. It takes the technical stress right out of the move so you do not lose your rankings.
