Hello, I’m new to Shopify trying to figure out how to do something.
I have a store that sales both base units and kits. So these are two products I already have in the store. The base unit is only the unit itself, and the kit includes the unit and everything else you’d need to install it.
I’d like to keep the products separate, for their collections, kits and base units, but I’d also like the option so that when a buyer is looking at a base unit, they can select a dropdown and choose to upgrade it to the kit.
I’m using Shogun to design the store, and from what I see, I can use something called variants to give options like this. The documentation says I need to create the variants in Shopify.
When I try to do this, it seems as though it’s creating new products as variants with new sku numbers. But I’d like to connect the existing kit product to the variant instead so that we can still keep track of the existing sales data and quantity available, and also keep the products separate in their store collections.
What is the best way to do this? Is there a better method than using variants?
Thank you for reaching out to the Community. The easiest and best way to offer kits and upsell options to your customers is through an app available on the Shopify App Store. This will allow you to achieve the design and customization you’re looking for. I have gone ahead and recommend a few you can check out:
This is a common one for our clients. As you already noted the variations become new SKUs so what our app does is let you assign the correct component SKUs to these new variants. We then update their inventory based on the component stock level and we also have the additional option of unbundling orders made for a bundled product into the component SKUs post purchase. This way the order lines are only for components and can be fulfilled as per normal.
In your example you could have a variation options for base unit and optional kit:
Option 1 : Base Unit
Option 2: Optional Kit
For the kit option you would have a default “no kit” value. You then bundle up each possible variation with their actual components using our bundleup app. You would probably bundle the kit product as well if that is made up of multiple other SKUs.
