What occurs accounting-wise when a gift card expires?

I am starting a new, unsolved question regarding the question, as I can see that people have been asking for a reply for several years on this thread, with no further interaction from Shopify: What occurs when a gift card expires?

The question is, when a gift card expires with value left on it, does that value really remain in our liability in Shopify (as per a tiny mention in this Help Centre article)?

Is so, why??? It is no longer liability once it’s expired. This should most definitely be an automated process but if it is something Shopify expects us to manage manually, can you please give us clear instructions about what we need to do?
