What occurs if you cancel a customer's paid order?

What happens if you cancel someones order on your site once they have already payed? Does shopify fine you? For example if you over sell a product that you’ve run out of stock on.

Hi there, @Nedsko . Hope you’re doing well today! Thanks for reaching out to the Shopify Community with your question about cancelling orders!

When cancelling an order, depending on the status of the order, a few different things will happen:

  • If order is ‘paid’ but not fulfilled - You will be given the option to partially or fully refund your merchant. If a situation where a product was oversold, a full refund would be the best call here! You would be prompted to refund the customer once you’ve begun cancelling the order.
  • If the order was fulfilled but payment wasn’t collected - You can cancel the order and won’t be able to collect payment any more.
  • Not Paid and not fulfilled - The order should automatically be archived. If it’s not, you can do this yourself.

If a refund is made, then the full cost of the product is returned to the customer. Shopify will keep the credit card fee, or any additional fees, that were charged, as these need to go to the banking partner to pay them for processing the original transaction. Beyond this, Shopify does not fine merchant’s for cancelling orders.

I have a link that goes over all of this information in more detail for you here!
