What’s your take on social proof messaging on eCommerce stores?

I’m curious how people here feel about social proof messaging on eCommerce stores (e.g. “X people bought this today”, “selling fast”, recent activity indicators, etc.).

On one hand, there’s plenty of data showing these kinds of messages can lift conversion rates and reduce hesitation — especially on considered purchases.

On the other hand, I’ve heard strong opinions that they can feel:

  • distracting or noisy

  • “tacky” or not premium

  • off-brand for certain retailers

  • or even borderline manipulative if done poorly

For those of you running or advising stores:

  • Have you tested social proof and seen meaningful results?

  • Did it ever clash with your brand or UX principles?

  • Are there situations where you’d actively avoid it, even if conversion improves?

Interested to hear real-world experiences rather than theory.

The social “proof” you’re talking about is easily falsified, just as reviews are.

It’s always in your best interest to be honest. If you’re blatantly lying to customers by adding fake stuff, they see right through it.

This is not only from a fellow merchant, but also as a customer. I buy pretty much every day for my hobbies, whether it’s gear, or supplies. I’ve seen all the tricks. Honesty truly is the best policy.

I agree with you. Fake or exaggerated social proof is usually obvious to visitors and it does real damage. Once trust is gone, it’s almost impossible to get back.

In my experience, the difference is when the data is 100 percent real and genuinely reflects what’s happening on the site. When it’s fabricated, people can spot it straight away. When it’s real and grounded in actual activity, it tends to be read very differently and can help reduce hesitation rather than create pressure.

A lot of the negative perception exists because so many stores have abused it, which I think is completely fair. Honesty has to come first, otherwise it just becomes another trick and customers are right to be sceptical.

It doesn’t help that Shopify makes it so easy either. A lot of these themes come with fake stuff like reviews already written, and all they have to do is turn it on.

But, sure, if you’re genuine, I don’t see a problem with it, other than it takes up space… A pet peeve of mine is the entry pop up. Can’t stand them, exit every single one. If I want to subscribe I’ll subscribe, leave me alone. I know others will swear by them. That’s cool. As a customer I just want to see what you have, I don’t need to be bombarded.
