What to do?

Hi. I’ve read a lot here and first of all thanks to all of you who share info, I hope it’s okay for me to post a post. The post is mostly about various things and tips when starting up. Which theme should you choose if product selection is not very crucial? Which apps must, great and perfect, be used in starting up? Choose DSer over AutoDS? Why? Or is looking towards more AI focused the right thing now, which ones should you look at or consistently choose because it’s just the best at the moment. I hope one or more will take the trouble to answer me.

Stick to Dawn for your theme. It’s free, fast, and honestly does 99% of what you need when starting out. Don’t waste $300 on a premium theme until you’re actually making sales.

For apps, keep it barebones. Store bloat kills conversion rates. Get a free review app like Judge.me and maybe Klaviyo for basic email flows. That’s it.

Between DSers and AutoDS, I’d just use DSers to start. It’s the official AliExpress partner and the free plan is plenty. AutoDS is fine but gets expensive. Fwiw, once you get consistent orders, you’ll want to move off both and use a private sourcing agent anyway. Ignore the AI hype for now. Focus on the boring basics: a clean site, decent product photos, and testing good ad creatives.

Hi @ByAlex

Welcome to the Shopify community.

Which theme to choose?

If product selection isn’t your main focus, then go for a theme that helps with conversion and flexibility.

  • Dawn (free): clean, fast, and easy to customise
  • Sense or Craft (free): works well for lifestyle or visual brands
  • Impulse or Prestige (paid): better design out of the box, less customization needed

Dawn is usually the best choice because you get more control and it’s easier to customize and also its free theme.

DSers vs AutoDS?

Start with DSers as it’s the official AliExpress partner, so it’s more stable. It also works well for bulk orders and pricing rules, and the free plan is enough to get started. Since it has a larger user base, it’s easier to find help and resources.
AutoDS offers more automation, but it’s more expensive and can feel complex in the beginning, so it’s better to use it later once you’ve validated your products.

AI tools

You can go with the following tools

  • Tidio: for chat and support
  • Replo: helps with landing pages
  • Reconvert or Adealo: for upsells
  • Klaviyo: strong for email and SMS
  • Triple Whale: useful later when you start running ads

Must-have apps at the start

  • DSers: product sourcing
  • Klaviyo: email/SMS
  • Judge.me: for product reviews
  • Search & Discovery: for filter on the collection page
  • Wishlist app
  • Shopify Markets: if you plan to sell internationally

Try not to install too many apps in the beginning. More apps can slow down your store.

Thanks

Hey @ByAlex

Quick honest take from someone who builds Shopify stores for a living:

Theme: Start with Horizon. It has section groups, AI generated sections, and basically every layout pattern you’d pay $400 for in a premium theme. Dawn is also fine if you want simpler. Don’t waste money on a paid theme until you’ve made your first 50 sales and actually know what you need.

Apps, keep it lean at the start:

  1. Judge.me (reviews, free plan is solid)
  2. Klaviyo or Shopify Email (email/SMS, Shopify Email is free up to 10k sends)
  3. Shopify Inbox (free chat)
  4. One bundle/upsell app only if your products make sense bundled, otherwise skip

That’s genuinely it for month one. Every extra app slows your store and costs money you don’t have yet. Add tools when a real problem appears, not preemptively.

DSers vs AutoDS: DSers if you’re sticking to AliExpress and want a clean free tier. AutoDS if you want multiple suppliers (Amazon, CJ, Walmart) and product research baked in, but you’re paying monthly for that. For a beginner with no traction yet, DSers free plan is the practical pick. Switch later if you outgrow it.

On AI tools: Don’t chase the latest shiny one. The useful ones right now are Shopify Magic (built in, free, decent for product descriptions and image cleanup) and ChatGPT/Claude for ad copy and emails. That’s enough. AI won’t fix a weak product or bad photos, so spend energy there first.

The real advice nobody gives beginners:

Apps and themes are not what makes stores fail. What makes them fail is no traffic strategy and weak product/photo work. Sort those two and a free theme with five apps will outperform a tricked out store with thirty apps.

Good luck with the launch.

Cheers,
Moeed

don’t overthink the theme. Dawn or Horizon, both free, both solid. you can always switch later once you actually know what features you need based on real customer behavior instead of guessing.

for apps, less is more when you’re starting. Judge.me for reviews (free plan is fine), Klaviyo for email, and that’s honestly it until you’re getting consistent traffic. every app you add slows your store down and adds complexity you don’t need yet. on DSers vs AutoDS, DSers integrates tighter with AliExpress but AutoDS has better product research tools. try both free tiers and see which workflow clicks for you.
