I posted in store feedback about my store fotwear.co.uk and got lots of helpful advice but one thing that came up is me not having traffic retention system, i have no idea what that is and would like an example of how to set something like that up.

As far as I know, by “traffic retention system” you must mean “Customer Retention”.
Now customer retention is a whole process that includes everything to make the customer happy and fully satisfied with the shopping experience. This would make them your loyal customer and increase your Customer Retention Power.
One thing that I really worked closely with is good “Returns and exchanges”. By providing a super easy option for customers to Exchange items (in case they didn’t like it or the wrong size etc.)
This way they will be more confident in buying stuff from your store.
