What's the difference between Collective and Collabs apps for affiliate marketing?

You are correct about the part that one is an app and the other is a channel. However, Shopify Collective is actually different from Shopify Collabs:

  1. Shopify Collective is a new program that lets US-based Shopify merchants sell each other’s products in their own stores at mutually-agreed prices.
  2. Shopify Collabs, meanwhile, is a Shopify affiliate marketing app. You collaborate with creators/influencers so they promote your products. In exchange, they earn a commission on sales generated.
