What's the difference between using SKU and barcode in inventory management?

I don’t really understand use of SKU and barcode in Shopify. We migrated our QB item # into the barcode field. Everything scans. Great! However, Shopify seems to use SKU everywhere and not barcode. We have no SKU data on any products. In the inventory list, there is no option to view barcode as a column. You have to select the item to be able to see the barcode. On the customer receipt, there is no option to print barcode. Only SKU in both these places. What am I missing?

You can use same barcode as both barcode and SKU in that case you will be able to see it under inventory entities as well as scan your barcodes.

Technically, SKU (stock keeping unit) is used to manage product inventory levels worldwide, not all shops even have barcodes, for example a lot of jewelry items doesn’t have barcodes at all. That’s why you can see SKU under inventory entities.
