What's the proper way to handle a Shopify exchange - without using POS?

Hello - I’ve been really struggling finding clear information around the best way to handle an exchange with shopify, without having to purchase a third party app.

Everything I’ve found on their site points to using Shopify POS. That seems great, except we don’t have Shopify POS - we only sell online. It seems like you need an ipad and/or additional hardware to set it up and run it as well (which we don’t have). I know there’s thousands of other online-only businesses on Shopify. Yet, when I reach out to Shopify support, they seem to also have no idea.

Has anyone found an easy solution to this that’s free?
