Hello everyone,
Most of our orders are from buyers placing orders to be shipped to a different recipient. They therefore will provide the recipient’s name and email address with the shipping address.
However, when they get to the checkout page, if that recipient’s email address is an existing Shop Pay user, then Shopify automatically sends an OTP text message to that email address.
Our buyers are extremely upset that the recipient is being sent this OTP without their consent, and this may prevent our buyers from proceeding with the order.
What is puzzling is that Shopify labels this field as the “contact for shipping notifications”, which is not how Shop Pay is treating this email address - it’s treating it as though it’s the buyer.
Additionally, even if the buyer ignore the popup and chooses Shop Pay to pay, the name and email of the order recipient they specified is automatically overwritten with the Shop Pay name and account details. The user doesn’t always realize that this has happened, and this results in the package being addressed to the wrong person and the package is to be returned.
We have been forced to disable Shop Pay for now, but as Shopify doesn’t seem to have another way for buyers to store their card details, and this is not something we can do without. We are having to investigate alternative providers and this is really negatively affecting our business.
