Users encounter an issue where attempting to customize their Shopify theme while the store is password-protected redirects them to the password page, preventing access to the theme editor. Even entering the correct password doesn’t resolve the problem.
Temporary Workarounds Identified:
Disable password protection temporarily to make edits, then re-enable it
Switch to Microsoft Edge browser (Chrome, Firefox, and Safari exhibited the issue)
Use the “Preview” link from the Themes page instead of “Customize Theme”
Create a new Google account (one user found the issue was tied to their specific Google Chrome account)
Root Cause:
Appears to be an authorization conflict between Shopify and Google Chrome accounts
Shopify renders the password page as the default preview when stores are hidden
May also involve browser cache issues
Current Status:
The issue resolves once the store goes live and password protection is removed. Shopify support couldn’t replicate the problem, and no official fix or documentation exists. Users recommend Shopify conduct more thorough testing and publish guidance on this issue.

I still haven’t opened my shop, so it’s password protected. Very often (like right now) I can’t click on Customize Theme in the admin panel and get to the home page to edit it. I get stuck on the password page instead. But even if I enter my password there I can’t get in. And if I try to select “home” from the pages dropdown at the top I still end up at the password page.
Sometimes it will work just fine for long periods. But like right now I can’t get in. I tried via a different browser as well.
Right now if I need to edit the home page or other parts I need to disable the password, make my changes, and then reenable the password.
Support is unable to replicate the problem on their end. But I can replicate it in different browsers on my Mac, and also on my iPad both over wi-fi and cellular.
Now that my shop is open it’s no longer an issue, but during setting up that’s what I ended up doing as well. For some reason there was no problem via the Edge browser on my Mac, even though I had the problem with Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.
For shop management I leave my Edge browser open, even though since the store is not behind a password any longer it works in all browsers.
Yes, it tuned out to be an authorisation issue between Shopify and Google Chrome. I created a new Google account and the problem went away. However if I login to Google with the old account the problem comes back. This workaround is ok, but I recommend that Shopify does some more thorough testing to stop this from happening. At the very least a note in the cause and how best to fix it should be published.
That’s because Shopify renders the password page as the default preview when the store is hidden. Instead, navigate to the Themes page, then click on the “Preview” link under the theme you want to use to bypass the preview mode. There is also the option of turning off the password page to get full access to customisation consistently, albeit temporarily.
