When variations added main image and SKU change to wrong entry

Hi
I took over this site and started to develop it better to make it useable, but I am limited in my understanding of programming. So I noticed that the previous developer had placed the default main image (both garment colours) in all the inventory positions. Now on the product page, in that state, the main image was first (as it should be, as the order was set in the product entry media section), but now I have set the correct image for each inventory item, then the first inventory items SKU and image appear on the page in the SKU and main image position, and the main image is relegated to second spot. How can I get the SKU to read the main SKU for all products which is 1001/1002 instead of 1001-SM? And how can I get the double image to appear fist again?

Thanks for getting back to me. But confused about the location of the product-level meta fields?
Also, the variants don’t have the main image only the respective variant image, and that is what makes the Media images mess up. The Two vest image is first in the Media section.
