I am not sure about exact numbers but most stores I see use Debut. Why would you remove such a popular theme instead of updating it? We cannot use many app functions since they are only compatible with 2.0 themes.
Topic summary
Debut was removed from the Shopify Theme Store in Nov 2022 along with other “vintage” non–Online Store 2.0 themes. New merchants can’t install it, and existing stores can’t newly select it. Debut is not an OS 2.0 theme.
Reason given: Shopify is focusing support on OS 2.0 and its features (sections/JSON templates, predictive search, product filters, improved grids, upsell blocks, flexible layouts).
Current options:
- Choose a free, Shopify-built OS 2.0 theme (link provided by staff). Dawn is referenced as having key improvements over Debut.
- Community workaround: an OS 2.0 fork of Debut shared on GitHub (unofficial).
- Partial upgrade: convert specific Debut page templates from Liquid to JSON to gain some 2.0 capabilities (may require hiring help).
- Safely test by installing as a draft and using preview mode before publishing (screenshot shared).
Other notes:
- wowskinscience.com uses the Cospora theme; buywow.in runs on Dukaan (not Shopify).
- Requests for a Debut ZIP/specific version (e.g., 17.14.1), a theme most similar to Debut, and guidance on bundles (Glossier-style) remain unanswered.
Status: No official download or update path for Debut; discussion ongoing with merchant concerns about migration effort and support.
