Which is the most flexible theme for non-coders?

Topic summary

Main issue: A non-coder struggles with Shopify theme flexibility (Craft). Specific pain points: added a Google font but can’t apply it, logo capped at 300px, and can’t add a new text field for the company name.

Suggested approaches:

  • Drag-and-drop page builder apps to avoid coding: Zeno Page Builder, Shogun, PageFly, GemPages. These offer visual control over layout and styling.
  • Try different themes: Debut, Ella, Blum, Electro. One vendor promotes “Ignite” as highly flexible with extensive section settings (font sizes, spacing, logo resizing) and metafield integration (custom data fields usable in sections).
  • For deeper tweaks, add custom CSS in theme files.

Platform context: Multiple replies note Shopify is less design-flexible than WordPress, Wix, or Squarespace for non-coders, though it remains strong for e-commerce.

Outcome/status:

  • The original poster calmed, thanked contributors, and plans to proceed with the suggested options.
  • No definitive consensus on the “most flexible theme,” but momentum favors using page builders and considering flexible themes like Ignite.
  • Discussion appears informally resolved with actionable next steps; no outstanding technical blockers mentioned.

As someone with no coding skills but who has built multiple Wordpress sites, I’m getting furiously frustrated with the Shopify themes I’m trying to work with. I added our brand’s Google font but I still can’t use it anywhere. There’s so little flexibility in Craft that I can’t even make my logo bigger than 300 pixels. I can’t add my company’s name in a new text field int

Is there a theme that I can drag/drop, edit to the sizes and content I need, etc. without having to write code or hire someone? Or should I just completely bail on Shopify and build from scratch on Wordpress like I usually do?

So fed up and I haven’t gotten past the home page header.

Hello @nataliegrogan :waving_hand:

You are right that the Shopify theme offers less flexibility compared to WordPress. However, because Shopify is an eCommerce platform, its features are optimized for eCommerce sites, not one-fit-all like Wordpress.

If you want a drag and drop builder, consider using a page builder, for example our app “Zeno Page Builder” to have more control over the design.

For even more customization, you may need to add custom CSS to the theme files.

Hi @nataliegrogan ,

  1. You can consider using page builder apps available in the Shopify App Store. These apps allow you to create and customize pages using a drag-and-drop interface, giving you more flexibility in design without needing to code. Popular page builder apps for Shopify include Shogun, PageFly, GemPages…

  2. Explore another theme such as Debut, Ella, Blum, Electro… I recommend that you can look for themes with a strong support team that can assist you in case you encounter any issues or want to customize code by your own.

Cheers,

Hey @nataliegrogan

We’ll be the first to admit that we’re not completely impartial, but we wanted to give you answer fit for 2025. We genuinely believe that we’ve made the most flexible theme on the theme store - Ignite.

All sections have a ton of settings, from font sizes, to spacing (including resizing your logo!) and very clever settings to allow the sections to be used in a wide variety of ways, including advanced metafield integration.

We’re pretty confident if you give Ignite a go, you’ll love it. If you anyone knows of a more flexible theme, we’d love to hear about it!

Good luck,

I also think that Shopify at good as it is for selling it is at the same time a very poor and unflexible for designing it. If you have no idea of coding you will be stuck many times. Even for adding a simple icon outside what is on the theme you will need coding. If you use Squarespace or Wix it is amazing what you can do with them. In contrast, Shopify seems like an old dinosaur of the XX century. There is a long way for them to be at the same level as modern web designers. There is a reason that creative people that want portfolios never use Shopify. But for selling, it is still the best option out there.
