Who pays for customs and delivery in online selling?

Hello

if i bring product to my country to sell it through my store, who is paying for the customs when a product comes to my country? Me, buyer or supplier?

and who is paying for delivery of a product?

Hi @Beka84 ,

Thanks for reaching out. That’s a great question.

Custom fees payment will depend on both country of origin and destination and the agreement between you and the supplier. However, whoever is receiving the goods covers custom fees and duties in most cases.

On the other hand, suppliers may be more flexible about shipping fees. For example, some may offer free shipping to attract more customers, but it might depend on the size of the order too.

The best course of action is to ask your supplier these questions before placing an order.

Did you already start your online store, and what products are you considering selling?

Hello @Iris

what do you mean by saying ” whoever is receiving the goods covers custom fees and duties in most cases.”? Do you mean my buyer or me seller? I guess you mean seller but i want to ask you anyway

i want to put shipping price separately so that buyer pays for it. It is how companies do in my country. Do you think it is a good idea?

Hi again @Beka84 ,

If the supplier is sending products in bulk to your address, then you, the seller, will cover customs fees in most cases. Similarly, you might also need to cover the shipping cost from the supplier to you. But, again, it’s up to you to discuss these details with the supplier.

If you are then shipping products to your buyers, you can undoubtedly set up shipping rates on your store checkout. Here is a guide on how to create your shipping rules.

Feel free to share more information about your store so I can help further. For example, what countries are you going to ship to? Did you check the average shipping cost to ship your products to buyers?

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi @Iris

i want to ship to Sweden. I will use Oberlo and want to do it via Alibaba. Can i do it? And how much is shiping costs then?

by the way, why dont i get these messages to my email when someone answers me here?

Hi @Beka84 ,

Oberlo is a dropshipping app that lets you source products from AliExpress suppliers. As a result, you, the seller, don’t have to handle the product directly.

It’s important to understand that Alibaba and AliExpress are different platforms with different approaches to ecommerce. Here’s the key difference:

  • Alibaba is a business-to-business (B2B) marketplace
  • AliExpress is a retail marketplace

This means that Alibaba is primarily used by businesses looking to source large quantities of products from manufacturers, wholesalers, and traders. For this reason, Alibaba is ideal for finding a manufacturer to produce an original design or source private label products.

On the other hand, AliExpress is used by both consumers and small businesses to purchase existing products individually or in small batches. As a result, it’s the ‘go-to’ platform of choice for dropshippers.

I would suggest deciding if you’re looking to dropship from AliExpress via the Obelro app or if you will buy products in large quantities from Alibaba as a first step.

If you opt for dropshipping, we recommend including the shipping cost in the product price or offering free shipping in your store. It is easier to calculate your profit, and it works as a great marketing strategy. In addition, customers are more likely to buy if the store offers free shipping. Here is an excellent article on this topic.
