Why am I being flooded with emails from legit Shopify stores?

I do not have a Shopify store, but have purchased items on other companies stores.

In the last 24 hours I’ve been flooded with 1,000’s of emails with subject line “Customer account password reset” or “Confirm you want to receive email marketing” or similar messages, not just in English but in dozens of other languages as well.

The emails are coming from legitimate shops, but somehow my email address is being used across all these shops. The flood is too much for Gmail’s filters to stop and is making my email address unusable.

Does anyone have an idea about how/why this happened and how I may be able to stop it?
