I’ve been trying to complete a test purchase for a few days now and keep getting this message, “There was an issue processing your payment. Try again or use a different payment method.” I’ve tried entering different cards and walked through my settings again. Could I be missing something in my settings to make this message appear?
I understand you’re trying to complete a test order on your site, but are running into an error. It sounds like you’re probably still in the trial period for your account, and the checkout is disabled until a plan is selected. If you want to do some test orders, all you need to do is select a plan for your Shopify account. Once you select a plan you’ll still get your remaining free trial time, and you will not be charged your initial subscription invoice until the day your trial ends. You’ll then be able to test your checkout, and even launch your store and start making sales if you’re ready!
Our help center has some information on selecting a plan from the settings of your account, but you should also see a notice on your admin stating how much time is left in your trial, with a button to select a plan.
Please reply back here to let me know if this helps, and happy testing!
Are you trying to test your checkout using Shopify Payments or Accelerated Checkout?
If you’re using the Shop Pay accelerated checkout, you will encounter an error while attempting to test this checkout because it’s currently not possible to use Shop Pay in test mode. The only way to test Shop Pay is to place a test order with a real transaction.
Secondly, what region are you located in? The reason I ask is because at the time of writing this, Shopify Payments Test mode is not supported for merchants in France, as outlined in our help document here. If you are not in France, then you should be able to enable test mode.
To confirm, are you attempting to place a legitimate order (i.e using a real credit card) or have you activated test mode within Shopify payments?
If you’re attempting to place a real order, it’s important to ensure the minimum spend amount is reached at checkout, or an error will populate. This dollar amount will depend on the shop’s currency and is in place to ensure you don’t lose money from the transaction after fees are deducted. As your shop seems to be in USD, the minimum requirement to successfully check out is$0.50. I recommend attempting to place another order that’s above this value to see if the issue is resolved.
Alternatively, test mode for Shopify payments will allow you to simulate successful and failed transactions. I recommend checking out our Testing Shopify Payments documentation for more information on this, but will require specific credit card details (i.e test credit cards) to complete.
If after attempting the troubleshooting steps mentioned above, you continue receiving an error, please feel free to Contact Support for further investigation.
