Hey!
Today i spotted that for the past 5 days we’ve seen a huge spike in ‘customers’ entering their email address to our website mailing list, all of them from russia. Non of them have opened or accepted the email marketing confirmation emails. The sign ups seem to be one every hour.
This feels like a spam attack, but i dont know why or how to stop it. Anyone seen similar?
I am assuming maybe the recaptcha has been turned off and some spammer is creating bot account on your store.
Please try to go to Online Store → Preferences and turn on recaptcha on account pages.
If this answers your questions, don’t forget to like and mark this as a solution.
Let me know if you got any further questions.

Hi, @trevorvielo .
Thanks for posting to the Shopify Community!
I understand you noticed an influx of customers adding their email address to your mailing list. Your main concern is that this may be a spam/bot attack.
As @Taknify has mentioned, you can enable reCAPTCHA within your Shopify admin for: customer account creation/login/password reset and newsletter email address entry + blog comment entry.
An additional layer you can add to your store to help the spam/bot influx is migrate to new customer accounts. Accounts created by bots will have to retrieve a passcode from the corresponding email inbox before the account is created. You can find more information and the steps on how to achieve this via our Setting up and managing new customer accounts resource.
I hope this helps!
