No, it does not work. I have tried this, I have two factor opt in and it works. But the spammers sign up through this page account/register and they come from the same location every time and they use a fake name and register as a CLASSIC account which I have turned off, and they won’t ever opt in because they are not signing up through the app I have installed. They are signing up on the classic account pages even though I have that turned off. I had Shopify “help” but the didn’t do anything to fix it and closed my support ticket. I have had this account for years and I don’t know if it is because I use an older theme but I’m pretty much over it and ready to shut my account and set up elsewhere. I pay too much for no support.
