Why am I unable to upload images from Dropbox URL to my products?

Topic summary

Users are experiencing errors when attempting to upload product images to Shopify using Dropbox URLs via CSV import. The error message states “File extension doesn’t match the format of the file,” and occurs regardless of URL parameter variations (dl=0 or dl=1).

Root Cause:
A change to either Shopify or Dropbox in early February 2024 broke the native integration between the two platforms.

Proposed Solutions:

  • Third-party app workaround: Ablestar Bulk Product Editor can download images directly from Dropbox URLs and then upload them to Shopify, bypassing the compatibility issue. The app accepts standard Shopify CSV templates without requiring reformatting.

  • URL modification fix: Replace “dropbox.com” with “dl.dropboxusercontent.com” in the image links. One user confirmed this solution works.

  • Alternative: Store images on a different platform or contact Shopify support to raise awareness of the issue.

The discussion appears resolved with the URL modification workaround, though the third-party app remains an option for bulk operations.

Hi @SolitaireBox ,

Yes, our Ablestar Bulk Product Editor app should be able to upload images directly from the Dropbox URLs without having to move them to another platform first.

Normally when you import a product you just send Shopify the URL to the image(s) and it downloads and processes them. With the Dropbox URLs though, Ablestar will first download the image directly from Dropbox, and then upload it to Shopify so that Shopify can handle it.

The formats of the URLs do change from time to time though so if you are still having problems with the images not coming through just let us know and we can get it fixed for you.

Best,

Daniel
