Wich payment provider did you get?
Topic summary
Multiple merchants report that all credit/debit card payments suddenly fail at checkout (Shopify Payments), while PayPal succeeds. Some banks show no authorization attempts, suggesting declines occur before reaching the bank.
Staff guidance: check “Payment events” in Abandoned Checkouts for failure reasons and contact Support via the Help Center. Several users say they encounter support loops, only escalations, and no timelines.
Workarounds tried:
- Updating the “Customer billing statement” (statement descriptor) under Settings > Payments > Manage helped one store (reduced ~15% daily declines to none over several days). Others saw no improvement.
- Switching temporarily to PayPal; one merchant is evaluating Stripe (notes fees differ from Shopify Payments).
Newer developments: one long-time merchant was told after 4 weeks that Shopify’s banking partners deemed their business “elevated risk” and would not support Shopify Payments, with no clear cause or remediation; instructed to use another gateway.
Additional symptoms: some see checkout loops with no error and inconsistent card behavior; one alleges missing timeline entries.
Status: unresolved. Causes appear mixed (bank declines, descriptor confusion, or underwriting risk decisions). Key open questions: reason for sudden declines and path to restore card processing.
For the moment we are using PayPal because we are in the middle of a sale. I am looking at Stripe for going forward. The percentage taken for each transaction is less than PayPal. Shopify also takes a percentage for each transaction, so it is costing us more per transaction than it did with Shopify Payments.
I recently had the same problems and the robot agent keeps saying ‘there are no issues’ except I’ve had 5 abandonned carts in two days which I never had before. I tried myself and realized my store simply won’t process the order, just brings me back to checkout with no error message whatsoever and I see later that it was declined. The robot agent was virtually useless and I wouldn’t be surprised its bad AI bots. What is worrying to me is this : for one transaction, Shopify conveniently DELETED the timeline of the purchase attempt and told me ‘the customer never actually tried to pay’ – Good thing is I have a screenshot which I sent to prove them wrong and they simply stopped answering after that. This is business malpractice and pretty worrying that they would do that. Overall, shopify will only care about you paying for your plan. After that, you are a nuisance to them and they will try everything to make you go away by providing fake answers and shifting blame on any person but themselves.
