I too am looking for a solution to this. One particular customer has an issue with a card they have had a long time. No moving, no changing and zip code matches. Is there a resolution for this? She has had this happen multiple times over years. Only with Shopify!
Topic summary
Merchants are experiencing recurring issues where legitimate customer card payments are rejected due to zip code validation failures, even when customers confirm their zip codes are correct.
Key Problems Reported:
- Multiple cards from the same customer being rejected despite correct zip codes
- Long-time repeat customers suddenly unable to complete purchases with previously successful cards
- Customers able to use the same cards successfully on other platforms, but not through Shopify
- Lost sales and customer frustration as buyers complete purchases elsewhere
Shopify’s Response:
A support representative explained that when zip code verification is enabled in Shopify Payments settings, any mismatch with the card issuer’s records will cause payment failure. They suggested customers verify their zip code on file with their credit card company.
Ongoing Concerns:
- Merchants question whether multiple failed attempts trigger additional blocks
- Some report the issue persists across years with specific customers
- Merchants express frustration about inability to use external payment processors
- One merchant reported a customer being charged despite receiving an error message, with no order appearing in the system
Status: Unresolved, with multiple merchants seeking solutions beyond the standard zip code verification explanation.
