Why are my collections are password protected?

Topic summary

A store owner encountered password protection on specific collection pages (“Hand Wovens” and “Upcycled”) despite having a paid plan and password protection disabled in Shopify settings.

Root Cause Identified:

  • Community members traced the issue to a BSS Commerce app previously installed years ago on an older site version
  • The app’s code remnants persisted even in the new theme

Resolution:

  • After uninstalling and reinstalling the BSS Commerce app multiple times, the password protection was removed
  • All collection pages now function correctly

Status: Issue resolved. The problem stemmed from legacy third-party app code rather than Shopify’s native password protection feature.

I’m setting up my store, and when I try to view Collections pages it says: Please enter the valid passcode in order to view the page.

  1. I have purchased a paid plan

  2. The “Password Protection” box in preferences is UNchecked.

This is only happening on the “Hand Wovens” or “Upcycled” pages, whether clicking on the images on the Home page, or through “Shop” in the Main Menu. I’m stumped! Can anyone shed some light?

Thanks in advance!

It seems that you are using an app from BSS Commerce?

That is causing the password lock.

Its not from Shopify.

I installed that app years ago on an old version of my site, and had forgotten about it, so thanks for pointing that out. However, I’ve uninstalled it and the pages are still locked. Thank you for your insight.

Do you have installed any app from “BSS commerce”? I see in the code their name.

Must be some remnants of that app still in your code.

You could consider starting over with a fresh theme … it will also have plenty of improvements now.

Strange, this is a new theme from what I used previously. Frustrating to say the least! Thank you for the suggestions, I will keep working on it.

Update: it is working now! Thank you so much!

I installed this app years ago on an old version of my site, and honestly forgot about it. After uninstalling and reinstalling a couple of times, everything is working now. Thank you!
