Why are new customers automatically set to 'email subscribed'?

Topic summary

New customers are being automatically marked with marketing status “email subscribed,” which the original poster believes is unintended behavior.

Context: The store is pre‑launch and collecting emails. Testing shows all new customers default to subscribed without explicit opt‑in.

Constraint: They do not want to enable double opt‑in, as a prior trial reportedly reduced opt‑in rates despite users signing up for the newsletter.

Definitions: “Marketing status ‘email subscribed’” is the customer consent flag for receiving marketing emails. “Double opt‑in” requires a confirmation email click before subscription is finalized.

Latest update: A second participant, some time later, reports experiencing the same issue and asks whether a solution was found.

Outcome: No fix, setting, or official guidance is shared in the thread. The issue remains open with no confirmed resolution or steps to disable auto opt‑in.

Hi Team,

My store is not open yet, but we are collecting email subscriptions in our lead up to launch.

During testing, we discovered that all new customers are automatically being set to marketing status ‘email subscribed’. My understanding is that this is not as designed. Does anyone know why this is happening, and how to disable the auto opt in?

Note: we don’t want to activate double opt in, as we trialled it for a while and it significantly reduced the opt in rate, where the people were signing up to a newsletter in the first place!

Cheers,

Jeremy
