Up until recently, Amazon Payment processor was a separate payment processor from Shopify payments and therefore was fully accessible to Adult Products shops.
However, without even being notified about the change, all “high risk” products shops were suddenly removed from the ability to use amazon payments due to it being removed as a separate payment processor and integrated into Shopify payments, which still has the severely outdated policy of not allowing adult products. I know this is because Shopify Payments is powered by Stripe which are the real evil demons behind not allowing adult products and that Shopify can’t do anything about that.
HOWEVER, could we please start keeping a separate third party payment processor for each of the ones included in Shopify Payments, so that not-so-high-risk merchants like adult products sellers can continue to sell on those platforms that explicitly allow our product types?
Or, how can we get approved for only specific processors within Shopify payments?
Shopify payments is now effectively gatekeeping some of our most important payment processors behind Stripe’s rules now, when those processors don’t have anything to do with Stripe. Does it make sense to not allow us to use payment processors that are very open to allowing our businesses, when we were able to use them before you put them under your Shopify payments umbrella? If so, why?
Hi @TiddyShop !
For high-risk products, Shopify payments does not accept products like this as it violates the Shopify Payments Terms of Service so, you may want to use other third party payment gateways such as, Authorize.net and 2checkout.
Sorry to hear that. I can’t think of a good alternative solution, I’ve seen people hook up custom payment gateways but it’s a pain.
One idea, if you’re using PayPal, you could add wording on your website and also in the checkout area that if paying with credit card, please select PayPal (I believe that your customers don’t need a PayPal account to checkout with PayPal).
You can edit the wording on the checkout page by using the “theme language editor” - https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/customizing-themes/language/change-wording
Not the ideal solution, but may help to show customers they can still use a credit card.
Another idea, not sure if it’s connected to Shopify payments, but I see a lot of stores using “Shop Pay”.
Other than that, you can promote apple pay, google pay, etc as “better” forms of payment, even offer a discount to incentivize it (then build that discount into your pricing).
Shop pay, Apple pay, and google pay are also all held captive under the Shopify payments umbrella with no ability to use them as alternative payment methods, so that doesn’t work. The only 2 working payment providers for adult products shops are PayPal and klarna. There used to also be amazon pay and afterpay, but afterpay randomly stopped working and was never fixed (lots of complaints on their Shopify app about this) and amazon pay, which was the second most popular payment provider for my customers, got hijacked from us by Shopify payments.
I’m seriously thinking of switching from Shopify to another solution.
K. I’m already starting the process for getting things ready to switch from Shopify to WooCommerce
Currently have a lot of customers telling us they can no longer checkout since they only had the ability to use amazon pay.
Ah wow, that’s annoying.
One other idea, when I ran a store a few years ago we had an option for people to pay using crypto currency, I believe we used an app called Bit Pay. That’s one of the ideas for crypto currency going mainstream, to give people the freedom to transact with whoever they want to.
