Why can't I make a payment of more than 15000 on Shopify?

Topic summary

Multiple Indian Shopify merchants are encountering a payment cap preventing them from paying bills exceeding ₹15,000 via credit card or ₹5,000 via UPI. The original poster’s ₹17,000 payment is being blocked, with the system displaying a mandate limit message during checkout.

Key Issue:

  • Payment gateway shows Shopify-imposed mandate limits
  • Affects recurring billing for subscription plans
  • Some stores have been frozen due to unpaid bills

Support Response:
Shopify staff attributed the cap to Reserve Bank of India regulations governing recurring payment mandates, suggesting merchants either:

  • Contact their payment provider (UPI/card issuer) to increase limits
  • Use alternative payment methods like Mastercard

Current Status:

  • Original ticket was closed after 10 days without resolution
  • At least 5 additional merchants report the identical problem
  • No confirmed solutions have been shared
  • Discussion remains open with unanswered questions about workarounds

Screenshots provided show the mandate limit warnings appearing within Shopify’s payment interface.

Dear all

We just recently joined Shopify and made our website. When we try to make the payment of 17000, by card or UPI it shows a cap of amount 15000 and 5000 respectively because of this Shopify can not take more than the mandate amount from our card and from our UPI.

When we raised the ticket they did not understand the issue:

1st they said it was from the card, but when we provided the mail from the card that it was not their issue and it was an issue from Shopify, they said it was a Razorpay issue, and when we explained that Razorpay is just a middleman. now the ticket has been pending for 10 days and one day they just closed the ticket without solving it.

we are attaching the screenshot and the blue column clearly says that Shopify only mandates the amount below the amount shown above.

please help as we are not able to run our website and it’s just because of Shopify customer care ineffeincey.

please if anyone can help and let us know how we can make them pay…

Hi, @DEKORWORLD

Thanks for bringing this situation to the Community Forums.

I understand you are having issues paying for your plan and that you have a cap amount through UPI of 15000. Unfortunately, if the bill amount is above your cap amount, you will need to contact UPI to have your limit increased to above 17000. Or, another option is to try another payment method such as Mastercard.

Unfortunately, we don’t h ave any control over UPI or Razorpay applying their additional charge.

Thanks for your message. But the mandate us not from Upi or credit card as
we do much more amaount payment from them. This message is coming in
shopify when we’re add our UPI OR CREDIT CARD. That means it from shopify
only.

Hi, @DEKORWORLD

Thank you for getting back to me!

The mandate is technically coming from both parties as an agreement that your card can be charged for Shopify’s recurring billing.

This mandate was directed by the Reserve Bank of India. You can learn more about the mandate here.

I hope that clears things up!

Did you get any solution to the above mentioned issue?
