Why did an app overcharge me on my monthly bill?

Hello Everyone,

This is not a question - am just writing this to share an experience.

So normally I do not have the habit of checking the Shopify Bill that arrives at the end of the month.

This time I did just by chance.

And found a charge of $75 from an app that I have subscribed to and pay $4 per month.

This charge had no explanatory notes.

I wrote to Shopify Billing and to the App support.

The app support confirmed that this was an error and told me that since Shopify Billing is the via media, I should raise this with them and that the app would confirm the refund immediately upon request.

So I raised it with Shopify Billing. They could not explain the charge and said they would check with the App - who then confirmed the refund to them as well.

So today I’m expecting to receive the refund back.

The alarming questions is HOW is it that Shopify clears such a charge without any checks and allows an app to charge an unusual amount without raising any red flags?

The other question is of course how did the charge arise from the App in the first place. I’m willing to believe their explanation that they are migrating to something else and this happened as a result of that. I’m willing to be understanding and trust their word and not doubt their intent.

But regarding the process lapse involving Shopify, I am a bit perturbed.

This means that I better be looking over my shoulder all the time, and double-checking everything.

Hope this experience will be of use to other readers.
