I am just starting to create collections. Whenever I have tried to create one in the last 5 days it has taken me to the 500 error page. I have cleared my browsing data/cache, tried on 3 different web browsers and on different computers. I can do pretty much everything else without any issues except for creating any collections. Any advice?
Topic summary
Users report a 500 error when attempting to save a new collection. The error occurs across Chrome, Firefox, Edge, multiple computers, and after clearing cache/cookies; other store functions work normally.
Shopify staff note no incident on the Status page and successfully created a collection in a test store. After confirming the error occurs at the Save step, staff suggested standard troubleshooting and then advised contacting Support via the Help Center to replicate the issue.
Another merchant reports the same error despite troubleshooting and observed a different store could create a collection successfully.
Latest development: the original poster discovered their account is on the Retail plan, which they say does not include the ability to create collections. This suggests a plan limitation rather than a platform-wide bug, though this was not officially confirmed by staff in the thread and may not explain all cases.
Outcome: No confirmed resolution in-thread. Recommended actions: contact Shopify Support, verify whether your current plan includes collection creation. Screenshots of the UI and the 500 error were provided.
Hi, @KanoshMerc .
Welcome to the Shopify Community, and thanks for sharing your question.
As per our Shopify Status page, we haven’t received reports of issues when creating collections.
When navigating my test store, I was able to go to Products > Collections and successfully create a collection. Please see the screenshot below for better visibility.
Are you able to share at what part of the creation process you’re experiencing the error? Are you able to Create a collection, but not able to Save and add products? What browser are you currently using? Could you also share a screenshot or video of the error?
I look forward to your reply.
I am able to open the page to create a collection and enter in all the information like the Title, Collection Type and Publishing but when I hit save it then takes me to the page shown below. I generally use Chrome, but I tried it on Firefox and Microsoft Edge as well and had the same result when I hit save. This is the only area on Shopify that I have this issue.
Thanks for sharing that screenshot.
It looks to be a technical issue on our end, however, we haven’t received any additional reports.
Could you try clearing your cache and cookies as well as trying on another device ex. mobile?
Yes, I have tried that several times on the different web browsers and computers I have used.
Thanks for trying those troubleshooting methods.
I recommend reaching out to our Support team through the Shopify Help Center, so we can try to replicate the error you’re receiving. If you need help navigating the Help Center, please let us know.
I am having the same issue with this as well. I am unsure on how to report the issue but I have tried clearing my cache and cookies, used Edge rather than Chrome, all of the other troubleshooting items. I was able to watch another Shopify store try and create a collection and was successful while I have continued to get the 500 error.
Apparently it depends on which shopify plan you have. Mine is the retail
plan and creating collections is not an available option in that plan. You
might need to ask shopify specifically if your plan has it because I
couldn’t find anywhere where it specified that information.
thank you for your help!
