Why does my Buy It Now button show a transaction failed error on my e-commerce store?

Topic summary

A Shopify store owner encounters a “Transaction Failed” error when clicking the Buy It Now button on a site under development. The regular checkout process works correctly, and the button functions properly on their live site.

Key troubleshooting suggestions:

  • Test from the published live storefront rather than the theme editor or preview link
  • Verify payment processor is not in test mode
  • Clear browser cache before testing
  • Contact Shopify Payments support if issues persist

The original poster confirmed they tested both in the theme editor and when published, experiencing the same error in both cases. They plan to contact Shopify Payments support.

Related issue: Another user reports experiencing the same intermittent problem, occurring more frequently in Safari but also reproducible in Chrome. They’ve contacted Shopify support and are awaiting resolution.

The discussion remains unresolved with no definitive solution identified yet.

I have been working on a new site I am currently trying to launch for my current e-commerce store and I am experiencing an issue with my Buy It Now button. When I click the button I receive a notification pop-up displaying “Transaction Failed - An error occurred while processing your checkout. Please try again.”

My Store is on the Shopify Pro plan. Also, when I add to cart and use the checkout button the direct to checkout page works great. Also, on the product page the dynamic checkout button is checked too.

Hi @Kibby ,

Is it possible that you’re attempting to test this while in your Theme Editor? Make sure that the theme version you’re wanting to work with and test is the one that is published, then attempt this test from your live storefront.

Also, be sure that you aren’t in “test mode” with your payment processor. You can check that using these directions here.

Should the issue persist, and you’re not in test mode, and you’re also not seeing any indications that there was an issue entering your credentials, your best next step would be to reach out to the payment gateway you are working with and seek support from there. If it’s Shopify Payments, you can contact a Support Advisor through our Help Center: (https://bit.ly/2OO3k4E) by logging in, selecting a shop, searching a topic, and clicking “Continue” at the bottom of the page.

Hi @Kibby

Preview link doesn’t redirected to checkout.
Please try this with actual store URL then it will work fine.

Hi @Kibby
if you check this url then it is working fine

Yes the buy now button works fine on our site that is currently live but, for the site that it is in development it does not work and that issue persists.

Hey Ren,

Thank you for the response! I am not in test mode and I have attempted to purchase through the theme editor which is where I get the issue. I have tested the store when it was published as well and I was getting the same error.

I will contact the shopify payments support about the issue. Thanks for the suggestions!

@Kibby

Can you share your duplicate theme URL like this?
https://mypitboard.com/?_ab=0&_fd=0&_sc=1&preview_theme_id=YOUR_THEME_ID

Thanks for the response, Kibby.

Just to clarify, are you still in the store editor despite the theme being published? Or have you tested directly from the website, as if you were a customer? I suggest clearing your browser’s cache and attempting to test your button through the website directly.

Hi Dbuglabpvtltd,

we’re facing the same issue with our store, but it’s intermittent and hard to reproduce consistently. I see it more often in Safari, but I did reach out to Shopify support and they were also able to reproduce it in Chrome.

While I am still waiting to hear back, I was wondering you might have any insights into why this might be happening?
