Why does my inventory count show incorrect data on Shopify?

Hi

I have found semi-regularly I receive a customer order for something that is not actually in stock on my shelves, and the inventory count on the back end is incorrect. I have not enabled the option to continue to sell the product once out of stock. I am the only employee so the only one who counts the stock and inputs on the back end and have been doing this more frequently to try to minimise issues but it still occurs. I am thinking there may be some sort of glitch with Shopify’s stock keeping? Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

That sounds odd, have you checked the inventory history of your product to see if you can spot any changes to its stock-count?

If you haven’t already done so, I recommend that you do this on your end to initially troubleshoot the situation. You can follow the instructions below to check your product or variant’s Adjustment history:

  1. In your Shopify admin, click Products.

  2. Click the name of the product.

  3. If the product has variants, then click on the variant itself or click the Edit button if present in order to load the variant details.

  4. In the Inventory section, click Adjustment history.

You’ll be able to view the product’s inventory history from there, and line it up against the product’s order date to see if any changes to its stock-count were made for it to be eligible to be sold. As per this help guide however, keep in mind that the system only currently allows for the most recent 90 days of adjustment history to be viewed.
