Why does my online store's screen turn white after clicking add to cart?

Hello. In my online store when I click add to cart button on the product page, the screen gets white and I can’t navigate anywhere from the white screen. I tried on another browser and another device. The issue still is the same. It happens when the cart is empty. After you manage to add the product to the cart, the problem doesn’t occur the second time.

There are a couple of things I’d like to check out with you, to see if we can find the root cause of this behaviour.

Would you have edited the code of your theme, especially as it relates to your product pages or cart, or added any apps which might have done so?

Again, apps that relate to or edit your product pages or cart would be what I’d look out for here.

If you’re not sure about this, I would recommend you try downloading a fresh copy of a free theme from our theme store so we can test this out.

Try adding an unedited version of a new theme to your store and see if the issue is present on that unaltered copy of the theme.

If the issue is not present there, we can determine that the cause of your present difficulty is localised to your current theme and we can proceed on that basis.

Let me know how you get on with these steps so we can proceed as appropriate!

As far as I know, I didn’t add any app to my store that can edit theme. But only one app - Alireviews edited the reviews sections of product page, such as the placement of ratings on the page, I mean they changed it. Other than that no, nothing else. To get sure, I can try another theme as you advise, but I want to know will all my changes to my current theme be removed?

You should be able to add a new copy of any free theme to your store without it affecting your current, live theme at all.

It’s possible to have up to 20 themes or copies of themes available in your Shopify admin at once, just be sure to make a note of which theme is live on your store and which is the new theme you’ve downloaded for testing purposes.

You can also always make a backup duplication of any theme you have so you’ve got a saved copy to fall back on.

As the issue is likely contained in your existing theme, we can proceed to troubleshoot there.

You mentioned you had added an app that may have edited your product pages, I would start by removing that app and any code changes it may have involved.

If you need help with removing any code added by a third-party app, you can check with the developers of that app who would be responsible for providing support.

There are a number of apps like the one you mentioned here in the app store, so check to see which is the specific one you’re using so you can get find their contact details on their app’s page!

Hi, I changed the theme. But now the same problem happens when I go back from the product page to the home page. I mean the white screen appears.

With the new theme you’re using now, did you add in any apps again or make any code changes or is this a completely unedited, fresh copy of a theme?

If you haven’t edited this new theme and you see the issue present still, please share a link to your store with me here and any other info you can on how this is triggered so I can try to reproduce this.
