Why Does Shopify Admin Search Suck So Badly?

When I’m creating a draft order and search for a product, I enter THE EXACT SPECIFIC VARIANT SKU into the field and it still returns a bunch of different products and variants. The SKU number is not used anywhere else on the site and there are no duplicates! How can it be this pathetically bad?

On the public facing part of the site, that same SKU search brings me right to the correct product with the options pre-selected to create the right variant. Then just add to cart. Why is the paying customer side of Shopify so dreadfully short on usability?

Hi, @SoCalMacGuy !

Thank you for sharing your concern.

Currently, when you use the product search function to create a draft order and input a SKU number, the system displays the product along with all its variants. You can then select the correct variant to add to your order. If other products and variants appear in the results, there may be some overlap or matching details. That said, I will be sure to share your input with our developers.

I did actually figure out that I could filter the results by SKU and that made it easier. Some of our products have a ton of variants so often getting to the right product is only half the battle. Is there any syntax that I could use in the search field that would add the filter? What I noticed is that if I add the filter first, then nothing populates until the SKU number is complete. It would be awesome if I could select the SKU filter and then get live results that narrow as I complete the SKU.

I agree with you the backend search sucks pretty badly. More the fact that if you search on the front end you get such a different result to searching in the back end. We have thousands of products we can’t always search from SKU sometimes we need to search by dimensions or material or purpose.

Have you found any apps that may improve it? Even though it means paying another fee, for somthing that should just work.

Has shopify done anything here? The admin search bar is basically the worst search bar in the world. How is this possible? How is such a simple thing so terrible? Make shopify look like a high school programmer could do better.
