Why does Shopify Charge £300+ for Calculated Shipping Cost?

Topic summary

A new Shopify merchant on the Basic plan is struggling with shipping costs because Shopify’s native calculated shipping feature requires upgrading to the Advanced plan (£344/month), which isn’t financially viable for a startup.

Current Impact:

  • Unable to offer worldwide shipping despite having printing partners with global capabilities
  • Receiving international visitors but limiting sales to UK only
  • Checkout complications when attempting to ship beyond the UK on the Basic plan

Suggested Solution:
Another user recommended third-party shipping apps as a workaround:

  • Shippo
  • Parcelify
  • Better Shipping

These apps provide calculated shipping rate functionality without requiring a plan upgrade. The original poster acknowledged the suggestion and plans to explore these alternatives.

I’m on the basic Shopify subscription as a new company and have lots of issues with shipping cost as Shopify add shipping cost together in different groups. In order to have calculated shipping cost you have to pay for the higher subscription of over £300 per mth. This is not feasible as a new company. Because of this I’m unable to ship worldwide. Although my printing companies can print world wide, it just causes too many issues at check out on the basic subscription, so to keep it simple I just focus on the UK. Though I get many visitors worldwide.

Hey there! I totally understand your frustration, calculated shipping is a crucial feature, but Shopify only includes it in the Advanced (£344/month) or Plus plans. However, a workaround is to use third-party shipping apps like Shippo, Parcelify, or Better Shipping, which allow more control over rates without upgrading your plan
