Why does Shopify resize my high-quality photos?

Hi everyone,

I just created and uploaded this product + photo to see how things were looking : https://www.tenthlegion.ca/products/jazz-life-william-claxton-signed

The photo was edited, resized and uploaded as a file of 377kb but gets resized when I add it to the product…

I use a dslr camera and edit with adobe lightroom so that I can get the best quality photos possible so it’s frustrating to see them altered.

The photos are well below Shopify’s maximum sizes of 20mp and 20mb…So not sure why they are being resized?

thanks,

Paul

anyone have advice on this or is this posted in the wrong spot…Shopify was not helpful

thanks for the help

Hey @goure74

I’d be happy to look into this a bit more with you, but I can’t promise a resolution. Images can be condensed sometimes by the theme itself, or wherever it is being served, to fit certain image dimensions or requirements.

When I view the image on the website, I can only see it as a webp image file. Can you share a link to the image from within your store? You can find the image URL, or upload it fresh for this use, under Content > Files in your admin.

We recommend uploading product images in JPEG as the best balance between format loss and load speed.

Currently, when I download a copy of the image from the website this is the specs I am seeing:

Image size: 1165 (w)× 1500 pixels (h)

Image dpi: 72 pixels/inch

File size: 59kb

You may need to host the images outside of Shopify, or hire a developer to assist you in customizing how the theme file serves the image on the website.

My image was only 377KB, but Shopify compressed it to 59KB and converted it to WebP. Is this due to theme-level optimization or Shopify’s default server-side compression? Is there any way to control or disable this behavior?
