Hey all, I’m new to Shopify and currently facing an issue where I don’t have the option to edit my store. I’ve seen on YouTube there’s a little paintbrush option on the left side to edit your store, but I don’t have that option?? I only have the “sections” “theme settings” and “app embeds” option. What’s up with that and why is mine different? please help me lol. I included screenshots for reference. Thanks
Hi @trent_bryant3 ,
Thanks for reaching out to the Community. I’d be happy to provide some assistance with this request, to ensure it gets resolved. To gather a bit more information, could you please share a link of the YouTube video you’re referencing?
We’re always working to improve to improve the platform, which means changes are consistently being made. The theme editor has since been updated, where the paintbrush has been replaced with the bolt. The features however, remain the same and should not experience any issues when clicking on them.
If you are running into troubles with customizing your theme, please feel free to connect with us directly. This will allow our support team to take a closer look, as we wouldn’t have access to any account details here through the Community.
Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
Hey! The paintbrush icon might have been part of an older Shopify interface. The options you see (“sections,” “theme settings,” and “app embeds”) are the current standard. You can still edit your store using these options. If something seems off, try updating your theme or contacting Shopify support for help.
Hey, I’m just trying to get the ropes down, I’m not able to access any type of drag-and-drop features (if Shopify offers it) for customization purposes. I don’t know how to change fonts, make texts bold, etc. And in the video, you’ll just see this guy can freely do what he wants, I don’t have this option just yet. Thanks. https://youtu.be/Nrn–oBrgIo?si=ReYbfC5m5W2jCQul
Hi there, @trent_bryant3 . Thanks for following up with us! My name is Imogen. It’s good to chat with you!
I took some time to checkout out the video you shared; I appreciate you providing us with that link. That video is a year old now, and our Theme Editor has seen some updates since then, as well as how folks interact with customizing them! The missing ‘paint brush’ is an example of something that has changed during the update - the paintbrush allowed you to change some styling aspects, which is know locateable by clicking the ‘gear’ icon.
In reference to the drag and drop movement shown in the video is specifically related to re-ordering the sections on specific pages in your theme, which is still possible to do by clicking and dragging the sections across the left hand section that loads when accessing the Theme Editor. If you want to change your font styles, you can do that by clicking the ‘gear’ in the theme editor on the left hand side. You may also need to use some apps or custom coding to change fonts in specific areas, and bold certain text. With that being said, the theme you’re using will have different ways to allow you to customize your theme; and editing specific parts of the sections that make up the pages in your theme. I recommend checking out our ‘Theme Settings’ guide so you can learn more about these specific parts of the theme.
You can definitely use the theme editor similar to how the user in the video was; it’s just a matter of exploring the theme editor a bit more, and becoming more comfortable with how it works. There are no restrictions set in place in the theme editor that prevent you from taking specific actions. The only limiting factor in your theme editor will be the theme you’re using itself!
Salute to you Mr Imogen!! Thanks for the info. Now let me go try this.
You’re very welcome, @trent_bryant3 ! If you have any additional questions for us, just follow up with us here and let us know, or start up a new thread!
