I find this one quite bemusing. It appears that there is simply no way to communicate with customers via email from the shopify admin, unless said customers have signed up to ‘email marketing’.
There are plenty of legitimate reasons to email customers that are not marketing related, but instead are transactional in nature such as stock delivery delays, disasters, etc but at the moment the only way to do this is to export all unfulfilled orders, de-duplicate the email addresses, paste these email addresses into the BCC of a normal email and send, with fingers firmly crossed. This takes it out of the shopify ecosystem which means there’s no customer record of the communication, no branding, no personalisation, etc. It’s horrible.
Surely the onus is on the store owner to not spam his/her own valuable customers? Why is it dictated to us by shopify as to who we can and can’t email? It’s just crazy.
Thank you for sharing your feedback on the email options available within the admin. You are correct that Shopify Email does not support bulk contacting customers outside of marketing or promotional emails.
Shopify Email is designed to provide marketing automation from within your admin but is not an email management tool in itself. While I can fully understand the ease of having that kind of email system accessible from within your admin, the Shopify standard ecosystem is not designed to support that. This is partly due to the trust factor built into our email system. To ensure that email clients maintain their trust of our email servers we need to have a tight control over the type of email content sent out. It would only take a few email campaigns from merchants to non subscribers to have our trust rating plummet, which would affect all our merchants across the board.
If you want to do this from within your admin I would recommend looking at a more robust email service like Omnisend. You will want to check with the app developers, but I believe this app is able to support that feature.
