Why is my computer's RAM usage so high when using Shopify on Edge?

Topic summary

A user reported excessive RAM consumption (most of their 16GB) when accessing Shopify’s backend through Microsoft Edge, causing performance issues despite clearing cache.

Suggested solutions included:

  • Clearing browser cache and cookies
  • Testing different browsers or updating Edge
  • Disabling browser extensions and testing in incognito mode
  • Checking for resource-intensive Shopify apps

Root cause identified:
Shopify’s admin interface creates RAM bottlenecks in Chromium-based browsers (Edge, Chrome) due to active scripts, heavy admin pages, and background processes like live preview tabs.

Resolution:
The issue was resolved by disabling unused Shopify apps and switching to Brave browser, which significantly reduced RAM usage and improved dashboard performance without requiring hardware upgrades.

Hey all, I’ve noticed that the Shopify tab on computer is using an ABSURD amount of RAM whenever it is open. For reference, I am using Microsoft Edge. I have 16 GB of RAM which should be more than enough, and Shopify is constantly using most of it as you can see in the attached screenshot. It causes me performance issues, and I can’t justify upgrading my PC specs even more just to load the backend. Anyone else have similar issues and/or ideas for how to solve this? I’ve tried clearing my cache to no avail.

Hey @ahass108 ,

No, shopify not consume such amount of ram. You may try…

  1. Clear browser cache and cookies.
  2. Try a different browser or update Edge.
  3. Disable extensions and check in incognito mode.
  4. Identify resource-intensive elements in Shopify backend.

And may be there is some app installed in your store that taking so much Ram.

Thanks

Yeah, that’s a known issue — Shopify’s backend can create a RAM bottleneck in browsers like Edge or Chrome, especially with active scripts and heavy admin pages. Try disabling unused apps or live preview tabs since they keep running in the background. Using a lightweight browser like Brave or Firefox often reduces memory load, helping your system stay smooth without upgrading hardware.

Thanks, that actually worked. I closed the extra apps and switched to Brave, and the RAM bottleneck is much lower now. The Shopify dashboard runs smoother than before.
