Why is my ecommerce website not generating sales?

Topic summary

Main issue: A merchant reports zero sales after 3+ months, difficulty reaching Support, and frustration over ongoing subscription charges.

Community perspective: Sales aren’t automatic with a new site. Success depends on product-market fit, professional presentation, competitive offer (pricing vs. Amazon), trustworthy details (address/phone), shipping speed, and clear value—often requiring months of brand-building.

Expectations clarified: Shopify Support won’t drive sales or build the business strategy. Merchant is urged to learn marketing fundamentals and follow proven entrepreneurs.

Staff guidance: Improve SEO (search engine optimization) with compelling titles/descriptions, relevant keywords, and customer reviews to build trust. Optimize conversions (make navigation clear; use prominent Add to Cart/Buy Now) and drive traffic via targeted social media engagement and hashtags.

Resources shared: Help Center SEO guide, customer experience blog, social selling tips, YouTube video on first sale, Shopify Learn course on traffic, and a blog on making the first ecommerce sale.

Status/outcome: No store-specific diagnosis or immediate fix provided. Thread remains open; action items are implementing SEO, conversion, and marketing strategies using the linked resources.

Hi there, I would like to know why I wasted money on a website that is not making any kind of sales and it is not getting me anywhere. I have had the site for over three months now and to be honest, I am still questioning why I wasted my time signing up for it. I can’t even get a hold of Support to see about getting some assistance with it so I need to know what is going on because I’m getting charged to keep the website open and I’m not OK with that.

Hi, sadly just creating a website won’t guarantee sales. There are many elements involved. Are your products great, is your offer great, does your website look professional? Do you offer free shipping or are you dropshipping from China where the lead time is a couple weeks? You need to instill trust in the shopper. Address and phone number to contact you? Can your product be purcahsed on Amazon for cheaper? WHY buy from you? What is the value you are giving the customer? So many things to do. Many successful stores that do it right don’t get sales for a few months. They have to build the brand and build trust. It is a process. If someone told you you can build any shopify store and get rich in just a few months, they lied. If you are serious, build a business. Learn, get books, follow successful entrepreneurs online. Shopify support won’t hold your hand through that.

I can definitely understand the significant amount of hard work and dedication it takes to create and manage your own online store. Rest assured, I’ll be happy to share some tips and resources with you to aid in boosting store traffic, increasing sales and bringing visibility to your brand.

  • To start, once you’ve set up your store and added your products, you’ll want to add compelling product titles and descriptions that highlight the benefits and features of your products. You can look into using keywords relevant to your target audience to improve search engine optimization (SEO). Additionally, you can also add customer reviews and ratings to build trust.
