Why Is My myshopify.com URL Showing as a Random String and Not My Store Name?

Topic summary

A store owner’s myshopify.com URL is a randomized string; they ask if it can be changed or made cleaner and why tools like Koala Inspector show other stores with cleaner-looking subdomains.

Key facts:

  • myshopify.com is auto-generated at store creation based on the entered store name; if that name is taken or the store was created via a partner/developer account, a random string is assigned. It is permanent and cannot be changed by Shopify Support.
  • Customers only see the custom main domain (e.g., tasarimduvar.com). Inspector tools may not show the real backend domain due to redirects, theme settings, or masking, which can make some stores appear to have custom myshopify URLs.

Possible path to a “cleaner” myshopify subdomain:

  • Create the store as a Shopify Partner (development store), choose an available name, build it, then transfer the store to your own account. Limitations include: you must be a Partner, you can’t transfer to an email that already has a store, and the desired subdomain may already be taken. Review Partner Program terms (e.g., revenue share).

Outcome:

  • The owner has already set up and designed their store and will not create a new one. Discussion appears resolved with the understanding that the current myshopify URL cannot be changed.

Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding my store’s myshopify.com URL.

When I created my store, Shopify assigned a randomized URL:

However, when I use tools like Koala Inspector to check other Shopify stores, I notice that many of them have cleaner, custom-looking myshopify URLs

My main domain (tasarimduvar.com) works perfectly, and customers only see that, so there is no issue on the front end. My question is specifically about the technical myshopify.com address:

Is it normal for some stores to have custom-looking myshopify URLs while others receive an auto-generated one?
And is there any way to change or hide the randomized myshopify.com name?

Some Shopify support agents mentioned that:

The myshopify URL is permanent once the store is created

Auto-generated names often happen if the store was created through a partner/developer account

Tools like Koala Inspector may or may not detect the myshopify domain depending on theme structure and DNS redirects

I just want to make sure everything is normal with my store.

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Hey @Apocan,

If you are looking for a cleaner url for the .myshopify.com then this is only possible when a Developer transfer the Shopify store to you.

if you want a cleaner way just logging in to Shopify then unfortunately Shopify generate random URL.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Hey @The_ScriptFlow

Thank you for the explanation!

If I understand correctly, the only way to have a clean .myshopify.com URL is that the store must be created by a developer and then transferred to me.
But I want to clarify something:
Can I create the store myself as a developer, and then transfer it to my own account to get a clean URL?

Just want to be sure.

Thanks!

Great Question.

Short Answer is yes, you can create a development store, then design it and after that you can able to transfer it to your own account. But there are the limitations and the rules that listed below.

  • You must be a Shopify Partner first.
  • You cannot transfer the store on the Email where the store already exists.
  • You cannot transfer the store where the Partner account is already exists.
  • There maybe concern with the same IP and shopify may take it as a Flag.
  • If you create a development store then you need to design it from scratch.

If you need help to create a development store and then transfer ownership then p/m me with the collab code so that I can create one and transfer ownership to you.

Thanks

I understand, that was a very clear explanation. I didn’t fully know how this process worked, so I learned something new  For now, I’ve already set up my store and completed the design, so I don’t need to create a new one. Thank you!

Potentially, you can create a store as a partner and then transfer it to another account of yours.

However, this should make you as a partner eligible for the revenue share from Shopify and this is against Shopisy’s policy.

Consider that address you want may be already taken.

Also, it does not really shown anywhere.

When you first create a Shopify store, Shopify auto-generates your myshopify.com address based on the store name you entered at creation time, or a random string if the name was already taken, or a partner app/developer account setup (which often generates random names)So if you built your store through a partner/developer account → getting a random myshopify URL is super normal.

A few things can make other stores look like they have custom URLs: They created their store earlier and grabbed the name before it was taken, Tools like Koala Inspector may NOT actually show their real myshopify URL, Some stores block or mask their backend domain in their theme.

Can you change your myshopify.com URL? No, it’s permanent.
This is 100% normal and the same for everyone. Even Shopify support can’t change it.

Hope that clears it up! If you want, I can also check your store settings or theme code to make sure your myshopify URL isn’t leaking anywhere.
