Hello Smusaid,
Thanks for reaching out to the community!
Here are some suggestions for you:
- Rename the sitemap: If the sitemap cannot be read or fetched from the Google Search Console, then changing the name of the sitemap can help you fix the issue. You can change the name of the sitemap by:
- Going to the Google Search Console
- Go to Indexing and then to Sitemaps
- Then, go to ‘Add a New Sitemap’
- Add the new URL - ‘https://domainname.com/?sitemap=1’, and click on submit
- Fix the problems related to the sitemap: Go through the sitemap and see if the sitemap is set up correctly. Some suggestions for the same:
- Use the XML Validate tool to validate the XML sitemap file and identify if there are any errors in the file. If identified, fix all the issues in the file, and resubmit it to the Google Search Console
- Ensure that the URLs mentioned in the XML file can be indexed. For instance, if there is a ‘Noidex’ tag given for these URLs, then they cannot be indexed by the search engine crawlers
- Remove all the cache files, as the browser saves cached versions of certain pages on the website, which can differ from actual versions; thus, it can create confusion for the search engine regarding how to render the page
- Ensure that the correct variation of URLs is added to the sitemap: Commonly, there can be four versions of the URL for a webpage, which include:
- Thus, you must ensure that the correct URL of every page of the website is added to the sitemap (including the URL of the sitemap to the Google Search Console)
Hope it helps!
