Why Is Shopify Changing My Product Category?

Topic summary

  • Issue: The Category under Product organization changes from “RINGS” (merchant input) to “JEWELRY” after a few days. This field is labeled as determining US tax rates.

  • Impact: Possible implications for tax calculation and product classification if the broader category is applied.

  • Observations: The change happens automatically and with a delay. It occurs on handmade items without UPC codes, ruling out UPC-driven classification in this case.

  • Hypothesis raised: One participant suggested Shopify may auto-categorize based on the UPC’s common classification across stores (e.g., if most map it to Jewelry). This does not explain this case because no UPCs are used.

  • Additional context: Another store reported similar unexpected category changes and believed UPCs were the cause, but this is unconfirmed.

  • Status: No confirmed cause or prevention method identified. No action items or solutions provided; the issue remains unresolved and open.

Regarding this:

—>RINGS (my input- which shopify changes to JEWELRY after a few days)

----->Determines US tax rates

If I input RINGS - a few days later I come back and Shopify has changed it to JEWELRY. Why is Shopify doing this and how can I prevent it from doing it?

Just a wild guess but it could be changing based off of the UPC you have entered for those products. Again, big guess but if 99% of the stores using that UPC code assign that item as jewelry, then it might automatically populate to that category assuming that is the most correct one.

Handmade - no UPC So I don’t think that is it.

Odd. Ours has changed in the past as well and we thought it was because of the UPC.
