Why is the card reader showing as unavailable on my iPhone 14?

I’m trying to setup Tap to Pay on iPhone. I have a new iPhone 14 running iOS 16.3.1.

From the Shopify POS app, I go to Settings ->Hardware → Set up hardware → and tap “Tap to Pay on iPhone”

The “Set up card reader” screen appears and after about 30 seconds I get the “Card Reader Unavailable” screen - “There is a service disruption that may be affecting the connection to your reader”. I’ve tried multiple times with no success.

Any suggestions?
